Hello list,
org-mode really changed my life, and allowed me to fully implement GTD the
way I wanted. However, I miss having access to it everytime, so, I'm looking
for a mobile device that could run emacs and org, and that I could keep in
sync with my laptop.
What do you think?
Any suggestions appreciated,
Marcelo.

There have been many discussions of this topic in the past. I would
recommend searching the gmane archives for iPhone, Nokia N810, Android,
portable, etc.
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.orgmode
If I had money to burn[1] and needed a mobile device, I would wait for
the Nokia N900, which is both a smartphone and a hackable Linux pocket
computer. There are Emacs packages that run on its predecessor, the
N810.
Best,
Matt

I am using org-mode on a N800 (or N810). It works pretty well in reverse-video
mode with emacs 22. Here is the link to the Emacs for maemo site:
http://danielsz.freeshell.org/code/mine/emacs-for-maemo/index.shtml
And one can easily sync writing with unison on the N800. The N900 looks great,
but until the price comes down the N800 and N810 are a great deal. They are
small enough to replace a Moleskine notebook and work with a folding bluetooth
keyboard like the iGo to give a truely protable org experience.

I took the easy way out - I got myself a Eee PC 1000HE which has a
reported 9 hour battery runtime in Windows. I get 7+ hours in Linux and
it's a full PC with an 85% keyboard. It's great for my purposes and it
runs full emacs and org-mode.

Hi Marcelo,
I am in the middle of writing a tutorial for worg on using org on mobile
devices. The short answer to your question is that there isn't really a
pocketable device that runs emacs at the moment. Nokia's Maemo platform
can run emacs, but I would call it pocketable.
So there are a few alternatives:
Use a device that can run ssh and ssh into one of your computer to run
emacs in a terminal. Nokia, Android and Windows Mobile all have devices
with ssh clients.
Use org-publish to make your files available as html or pdf. This gives
you a read only version of your org files.
Use one of the services like reqall that can accept input via voice,
Instant Meaaging, etc and publish it as an rss feed. You can then use
one of the scripts available to import this into your org files.
Ian.

I assumed you meant to say "not pocketable" and, if so, I guess it
depends on what kind of pockets! My N810 fits in the pocket of any of
my jackets or coats and does in fact fit in my trouser pockets but the
latter is not necessarily ideal...

Few days ago the Nokia N900 (the successor of the N810) was released [1].
Although it is a little bit pricey, I am definitely looking forward to buy
one see Emacs + Org-Mode running on one of those things. Check it out [2].
This is the as "PocketEmacs" you can get :-). I wonder what other wonderful
ways of using Org can be developed if "Mobility" is added to the equation
:-).

Hi Marcelo,
check the CategoryPorts page on the emacswiki:
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CategoryPorts
Personally I use emacs on my android phone, which includes a
Debian installation, see here:
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/EmacsOnAndroid
I use the android scripting environment to access android
programs from emacs. This allows me to make phone calls/send
text messages with BBDB in emacs, while I can still use the
useful gui stuff in android such as maps, web-browsing,
bar-code scanner etc.
I believe android is the way to go since it is open source
and hackable, while also having a large repertoire of cool
and useful apps.
The only drawback is that the initial setup is quite
complicated and time-consuming. You need to be fairly
technically minded.

Hi
I have a web-dav set up via dreamhost on a remote server
(http://myfile.clsnyder.com/orgmode/index.org)
I have mobile org on my iphone.
When I ftp transferred files to the server, they show up on the iphone app, and
sync and work fine.
I am unable to push or pull anything from my windows/mac home computers from the
server via emacs;
Under Org Mobile group, I put http://myfile.clsnyder.com/orgmode/ as the org
mobile directory (where would I input the username and password?)
When I try to push files and views or get captured, I get a
"org-mobile-check-setup: Please set `org-directory' to the directory where your
org files live" error
? any ideas
GNU Emacs 23.1.50.
orgmode 6.33a
windows 7
Thanks

In your emacs config, you need to set that org-directory variable so
that org mode knows where to get/send the files.
See http://orgmode.org/manual/Setting-up-the-staging-area.html
For instance:
(setq org-mobile-directory "/scp:yoursever.org:orgmode/")
You've set the "org mobile directory": please check whether that ended
up as 'org-mobile-directory' in your emacs config. Perhaps you only set
it once and didn't save the settings?
Another point: sure that the "http://" of yours is writable? I'd rather
expect ftp or https or scp instead of plain http.

My earlier post was in regard to problems with sync from mobile org on a
iphone to a webdav folder on
a remote server (in this case a dreamhost account).
I got it to work, and though perhaps this overly simplistic description of
the steps would be helpful to
someone else.
The instructions are for a mac, but windows XP will mount webdav folders as
well.
Unfortunately, windows 7 "hates" webdav, and the easiest way is to install
(free) external software to mount a webdav
(at least that's my understanding):
1. Go to the finder
2. Click on Go and choose 'connect to server'
3. The server is http://myfile.clsnyder.com/orgmode
4. Click Connect
5. The user name is username
6. The password is password
7. Save as a favorite - it will always need to be mounted in order to
access it
8. An icon will show up on the desktop called 'orgmode': this has the
remote files
9. You must identify the org-mobile-directory as "/Volumes/orgmode/" -
this can be done either in
.emacs or just click org -> Mobile org -> Setup. If the latter, save for
all future sessions.
10. The org-mobile-files are "/Users/clsnyder/Dropbox/emacs_org/personal.org
",
"/Users/clsnyder/Dropbox/emacs_org/reference.org",
"/Users/clsnyder/Dropbox/emacs_org/notes.org",
"/Users/clsnyder/Dropbox/emacs_org/journal.org",
"/Users/clsnyder/Dropbox/emacs_org/calendar.org"
Again, this can be done in .emacs or as described above
11. This should work
Hope this helps someone.

For about two weeks since getting a new ipad I have not been able to
re-install mobile org. After setting up dropbox I can log in from MobileOrg
but the target directories are not created and they are not use if I create
them manually. This seems to me to be resulting from a change in dropbox.
Perhaps these are anticipated by the promise of a version 1.71 that appears
to be expected but not available. I would appreciate direction to
installation instructions that are current or other explanation.
Thank you

Hey Paul,
MobileOrg for iOS maintainer here. The issue you're facing is probably due
to the deprecated v1 Dropbox API. The next MobileOrg release, v1.7, is soon
to be released and will use new Dropbox APIv2. I can confirm from a few
reports from TestFlight test users that it works well.
Thanks for your interest in MobileOrg, it's great to hear that there are
people besides just me that use it :)

Will mobile org work in Android PI? If not, any good alternatives beyond
orgsly available? I don't like to have to use dropbox and would like to
plug a usb cord into my computer and synchtronize my orgmode files that
way if possible. Last time mobile org got updated was 2013 according to
google play store unless later updates happened by git or github. Mobile
org donate also had a 2013 last update in the google play store too and I
wouldn't have minded paying for that if it would work with Android Pi and
would also work with android Q.

I use termux + emacs personally, and then sync with git from the command
line. It's obviously not especially phone-optimized UX, typing on a
command line...but depending on your needs and alternatives it may be
acceptable.

I can't do that unless termux emacs is a different application from
termux since I'm using talkback on android and termux and talkback work
strangely together.

I meant the standard one in termux, so this probably won't work for you
then.
One other thought, if your only concern with orgzly is Dropbox, you
might consider an open source alternative such as Syncthing. I used to
use that on my computers and phone to sync my org before moving to
termux. By default it does use some sort of cloud locator service for
NAT hole punching etc, but I believe you can turn that off.
In general, though I do wish there were more options in this space.

I personally use Orgzly. I use a directory on my device as the
repository and sync it with Foldersync. However, I have been following
Orgzly's development, Webdav and git sync have just been implemented.

Just curious but what do you sync to with Foldersync?

I hadn't noticed git sync?

I've been using orgzly, and I didn't even realize it had dropbox support
:-) Looking at f-droid, I don't see an antifeature, so I'm not sure
what's up there.
I keep my org files in git. I use orgzly as readonly because sync/merge
is basically messy, especially since orgzly has a notion of sync from
orgzly internal to android filesystem, and then one has to sync that.
(It might work fine, but I have never tried.)
I have a clone of my org repo on a regular computer, and run syncthing
there and on the phone. The org repo that is special for syncthing gets
updated every morning. So whenever the phone has power and wifi
(because I set it that way), it gets a copy of the repo that is
reasonably fresh.
orgzly itself has been solid and it is kept updated on f-droid.
It is true that syncthing has relay and discovery servers, but they can
indeed be turned off. My understanding is that the servers run open
source code and do not have plaintext access, but I can of course see
why you don't want that, both to avoid traffic analysis and on
principle.

Hi
I use Orgzly with Nextcloud through webdav and it works pretty good.
Best!

I saw this recently, and haven't seen it mentioned on the list:
https://organice.200ok.ch/
Here's an intro video: https://invidio.us/watch?v=aQKc0hcFXCk
It's a browser-based interface rather than an app, so it should work
just about anywhere. It doesn't solve the syncing problem itself;
instead it allows you to sign in with Dropbox, Google Drive, or WebDAV.
Still not great if you're trying to avoid the proprietary services and
sync with a cable, but it looks like an interesting alternative to
Orgzly.

Hm... organice is suspiciously similar to https://org-web.org/, which I had
seen before. Even the Sample files are almost identical.
Looking at the github history, organice seems to be a fork of org-web, but
with more recent development.

If org-web and organice are browser-based, why do they need syncing? Could
the server be your regular non-mobile Org machine?

Presumably yes, if you're willing to keep it online and run a WebDAV

Yes, I think I saw somewhere that it's a "friendly" fork.

I got orgsly and dropbox working on my phone. I tried rclone dbxcli and
dropbox-cli and couldn't get any of them to link dropbox up to my
computer. Probably packages need updates.
