That's interesting. From the same example I get

<colgroup><col align="right" /><col align="right" /><col align="right" 
/></colgroup>

...using freshly pulled 7.01trans. What might account for the difference?

Good for Opera! I think Firefox generally ignores colgroup styling. 
Doesn't work on Safari, either.
