Hello

Since I can't submit a bug report I attach the error trace
when I try to open a file in org mode:

Dear Uwe,

I'd like to bring you in contact with Michael Sperber (CCed). He has
taken up the task to keep Org usable in XEmacs, so maybe you can
work together to create the necessary patches.

Without Michael, I would have dropped XEmacs support for 7.xx,
but this is no longer on the agenda. Only, I do not have myself
the time to attend to these compatibility issues.

Thanks!

- Carsten

Hi Uwe

I'm also using 21.4.22.

To send bug reports just copy org-colview-xemacs.el over org-colview.el

To get rid of the (void-function decompose-region) error message I
copied the following definition from mule-composite.el from
xemacs-21.5-b28:

(defun decompose-region (start end)
  "UNIMPLEMENTED.
Decompose text in the current region.

When called from a program, expects two arguments,
positions (integers or markers) specifying the region."
  (interactive "r")
  (let ((modified-p (buffer-modified-p))
        (buffer-read-only nil))
    (remove-text-properties start end '(composition nil))
    (set-buffer-modified-p modified-p)))

Then org-mode started fine for me. But I had to do some other changes in
order to execute source blocks with babel and produce html and pdf
output.

(error "PDF file was not produced from %s" tex-file)
       (set-window-configuration wconfig)

These two patches are needed due to differences in the following
function definitions:

Emacs: (defvar symbol &optional initvalue docstring)
XEmacs: (defvar SYMBOL INITVALUE DOCSTRING)

Emacs: (shell-command command &optional output-buffer error-buffer)
XEmacs: (shell-command COMMAND &optional OUTPUT-BUFFER)

In addition the function number-sequence is not defined in XEmacs. So I
copied the definition from the emacs distribution (in subr.el):

(defun number-sequence (from &optional to inc)
"Return a sequence of numbers from FROM to TO (both inclusive) as a list.
INC is the increment used between numbers in the sequence and defaults to 1.
So, the Nth element of the list is \(+ FROM \(* N INC)) where N counts from
zero. TO is only included if there is an N for which TO = FROM + N * INC.
If TO is nil or numerically equal to FROM, return \(FROM).
If INC is positive and TO is less than FROM, or INC is negative
and TO is larger than FROM, return nil.
If INC is zero and TO is neither nil nor numerically equal to
FROM, signal an error.

This function is primarily designed for integer arguments.
Nevertheless, FROM, TO and INC can be integer or float. However,
floating point arithmetic is inexact. For instance, depending on
the machine, it may quite well happen that
\(number-sequence 0.4 0.6 0.2) returns the one element list \(0.4),
whereas \(number-sequence 0.4 0.8 0.2) returns a list with three
elements. Thus, if some of the arguments are floats and one wants
to make sure that TO is included, one may have to explicitly write
TO as \(+ FROM \(* N INC)) or use a variable whose value was
computed with this exact expression. Alternatively, you can,
of course, also replace TO with a slightly larger value
\(or a slightly more negative value if INC is negative)."
(if (or (not to) (= from to))
      (list from)
    (or inc (setq inc 1))
(when (zerop inc) (error "The increment can not be zero"))
(let (seq (n 0) (next from))
      (if (> inc 0)
          (while (<= next to)
            (setq seq (cons next seq)
                  n (1+ n)
                  next (+ from (* n inc))))
        (while (>= next to)
          (setq seq (cons next seq)
                n (1+ n)
                next (+ from (* n inc)))))
      (nreverse seq))))

Right now with these changes the latest org-mode works fine for me (at
least for my usage pattern).

This was extremely useful thanks very much, I will test it
as soon as possible.

Carsten, couldn't Volkers code(patch) be included maybe wrapped
with a
      (if (featurep 'xemacs)

thanks

Hi Carsten

I did not try yet, will do so tomorrow. Do I understand
correctly: the only way to get that version is via git?

You could get the latest source (updated daily) as a tar ball[1] or zip file[2]

[1] http://orgmode.org/org-latest.tar.gz
[2] http://orgmode.org/org-latest.zip

For xemacs 21.4.X? No but the reason is simple the recent
version of org does not ship the noutline file, so no
wounder that I obtain an error message of the sort

While compiling toplevel forms in file /home/oub/ALLES/xemacs/site-lisp/packages/org-mode-web/lisp/org.el:
!! File error (("Cannot open load file" "noutline"))
>>Error occurred processing lisp/org.el: Cannot open load file: noutline

You mentioned that noutline will not be shipped any more,
but then I don't understand that error message.

I think noutline is now in XEmacs, in some package - but I do not know
which versions of XEmacs will/can load this package. It should be in
a file outline.el and provide both outline and noutline.

Michael, can you help sort this out, please?

The new outline.el (i.e. the one that ships with the current xemacs-base
package) also works with 21.4. But it is called outline.el, not
noutline.el.

But I believe you told me that this outline.el has provide statements

Thanks.

Yes. But if it's not loaded yet, you need to call it by "outline".
(I.e. it's in file outline.el, not noutline.el.)

Org does:

   (require 'outline) (require 'noutline)

so this works.

Thanks!

I just downloaded the latest xemacs-base pkg and yes the
compilation works, with respect to noutline!

*But* I still have to modify org-freemind by

  (if (featurep 'emacs)
(require 'rx))

To org-freemind
otherwise it *does not* compile

itself seems to work, so far

Yes. I still need to et to fixing org-freemind.el. Unfortunately,

By fixing you mean that it could compile under Xemacs?

But couldn't you just add

 (if (featurep 'emacs)
 (require 'rx))

For the time being so that org could be used under Xemacs
(and you would not receive the corresponding complains :-D )

I have just updated org-freemind in the repository in a way that will
hopefully be compatible with Emacs and XEmacs. In particular, I got
rid of the rx dependency.

Testing under both Emacs and XEmacs would be highly appreciated.

Well I just downloaded
http://orgmode.org/org-latest.tar.gz

And in this package I can't see your change,
org-freemind is the same as in the package of yesterday

AFAIK, that's the latest *released* version: it's only updated for
releases. If you don't want to use git to get the latest development
version, you can get a tarball of it (or any version really) from

    http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git

Choose which snapshot you want and click the tar.gz or zip link at
the right end of the corresponding line (although I just pulled and
I don't see any updates to org-freemind.el - in particular, it still
requires rx - maybe Carsten forgot to push?)

Ok I downloaded it,

    - compilation now is fine! (Xemacs 21.4.22 Mule with
the newest xemacs-base pkg). Maybe that should be
       added in the documentation!

    - org also seems to work as far as I can tell.

thanks

I may be mistaken: I use git to update so I don't keep track of the
tarballs. But there are occasional hiccups and sometimes the tarballs
get out of sync, e.g. most recently at the end of September - see

         http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.orgmode/31131

Currently I see both org-latest.zip and org-latest.tar.gz dated
2010-10-16 01:00 - and, btw, the top-level directory in both archives is
org-mode-web, which, according to Bastien in the above thread, is wrong
and should be fixed.

Overall, I think getting snapshot tarballs like this is more reliable;
but using git is much more efficient, both in terms of server resources
and in terms of efficient use of your time: if you are uploading a
tarball more often than every month, you owe it to yourself to use git.

Not only on this list, but also in the home-page !

Yes :-(

That's strange. I downloaded org-latest.zip on the 20th October
and the commit was:
Org-mode version 7.01trans commit-4cd56cfa7b93902544acb32848e36ee4004239a3
And it seemed to me that was the latest.

Yes, I did some black magic to have a working org-latest.zip(org-mode/blah-blah)

Uhhh nice! Thanks, Nick, I've learned something new today.

Bastien, would it be possible that the link in the homepage:

For people who cannot use git we provide <a href="org-latest.zip">zip</a>
or <a href="org-latest.tar.gz">tar.gz</a> snapshot release
files updated each day
and corresponding to the latest git version.

will point to such page?

E.g.

For people who cannot use git, the
snapshot release files,
corresponding to the latest git version,
are provided <a href="http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git">in the git
repository</a>. Choose which snapshot you want, presumably
the first line in the "shortlog" section and click the
tar.gz or zip link at the right end.

Pros: we will not have the problems of syncing

Cons: we will not have the file http://orgmode.org/org-latest.tar.gz
one can download directly, in a script...
but they have to use the browser.

cheers,
Giovanni

Thanks are due Jambunathan K. (iirc): he pointed that out a couple

Maybe keep org-latest.{tgz,zip} on orgmode.org, but add a mention
of the other method just in case there are syncing problems with the
tarballs.

Hi,

here is the crontab line that Bastien uses to create the *latest.tar.gz.

0 0 * * * /home/cdominik/bin/tarzip-latest-org.sh >> /dev/null 2>&1

So in principle these should be produced daily.

So I I say I just made a fix, you cannot expect the change to be in
there
before tomorrow. And the crontab process may get hung up for a while,
and then
these files will be out of date.

Clearly, the superior way to get bleeding edge is git. No other process
we provide will ever be as reliable.

Looks like the below URL (with no modification whatsoever) always
downloads the current tip of the tree.

This is cool!

Can you please document this in an appropriate spot on Worg?

Just for the sake of clarity: org-latest.zip is about latest development
versions.

The release archives have the version number in their names.

It's now fixed.

I've been late in fixing the tar/zip issue, sorry for that.

I would have been aware of the problem earlier if someone started
another thread about this problem with a proper subject :)

I hope it's better now, and that the information on the website is
more accurate and helpful.
