Typically, using the agenda tags search: C-c a m
and, if that fails, the more general search: C-c a s
where "C-c a" has been bound to org-agenda.

Less frequently, org-sparse-tree (C-c /) within a specific org file.

Yes, sorry, very much for IMAP.  Probably possible with other backends
but I only use IMAP because of wanting to access my emails from various
devices.
