These characters may be helpful:

☐: U+2610 BALLOT BOX
☑: U+2611 BALLOT BOX WITH CHECK
☒: U+2612 BALLOT BOX WITH X

How helpful they are probably depends on your font; they look good but
small in DejaVu Sans Mono.
