I had the same problem with emacs 24.2 after upgrading to org 7.9
(package version is given as: 20120827) via ELPA.  I could somehow
circumvent the problem by adding

(add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/elpa/org-20120827")

to my .emacs.
