I cannot reproduce it. I get:

    #+name: reversed-strings
    | abcde   | edcba   |
    | flibble | elbbilf |
    | dibble  | elbbid  |
    | xyzzy   | yzzyx   |
    | another | rehtona |
    #+TBLFM: $2='(org-sbe scramble-string (str $$1))

AFAIK, `org-sbe' is limited to tables.
