If we want to expand the influence of org, tooling=20 > must > expand beyond Emacs. While Emacs is an amazing tool, ... I=C2=A0disagree (in principle, not just because it would be difficult)=20 with the idea of =E2=80=9Cexpanding beyond Emacs=E2=80=9D. Org-mode benefit= s=20 greatly from current and future Emacs development, and asking to=20 standardize =E2=80=9Cjust the parts that are not Emacs=E2=80=9D would cause= =20 Org-mode to lose that huge advantage. Org-mode relies heavily on=20 the editor it=E2=80=99s=C2=A0built on, and if it ceased to rely on Emacs, i= t=20 would be forced to rely on =E2=80=9Cnothing at all=E2=80=9D instead. Not on= ly=20 that, but for Org-mode users being able to count on all of Emacs=20 is a big part of why it works. This means separating Org-mode from=20 Emacs is a =E2=80=9Close-lose=E2=80=9D idea. As far as the level of difficulty, any developer thinking =E2=80=9CI=C2=A0w= ant=20 my application to be able to run Org-mode=E2=80=9D really just has one=20 item on their to-do list: Duplicate every detail of Emacs,=20 including all the obscure capabilities and all the quirks,=20 especially that everything user-modifiable is in Emacs Lisp, and=20 maintain all future updates in lockstep with whatever the future=20 Emacs developers decide. Sounds like fun. :) If you admire a certain car maker=E2=80=99s=C2=A0engines, you can probably = get=20 one somehow to install in a unique car you=E2=80=99re building. But this=20 situation isn=E2=80=99t really like that. This idea is more like wanting=20 to buy just the speed indicator from a fast car and install that,=20 expecting it to improve your car=E2=80=99s acceleration. --=20 David Rogers
