Sébastien Miquel would had more chances to convince people if, instead of referencing the thread related to deprecation of "$...$", the manual was cited with the commit that broke described behavior. So partially it is a communication issue. I do not have strong opinion if support of $n$th is tightly bound to recognizing $n$-th. On the other hand I would not object deprecation of "$...$".
