Maybe a new default has been setup? I recall a recent discussion about
sly. Maybe try setting this to your lisp?

(setq inferior-lisp-program "/usr/local/bin/sbcl")

I am not sure if you also need this:
(require 'slime)
(slime-setup)
(slime)

I only have a little experience with other lisps.
