You *can* search in links without changing modes.

<menu-bar> <edit> <search> <search-forward> Exa RET

runs nonincremental-search-forward on "Exa" and  finds Rainier's 
`*Example' if point preceeds it.

M-x occur RET Exa RET

finds the link, too.
