Pardon me for resurrecting an old thread, but I am sorry to report that I'm experiencing the issue described below today.

Since I use eschulte's starter kit for my emacs initialization, it's not easy to start a fresh emacs and install org-mode from ELPA before calling any org-mode functions.

Presently I'm going to start emacs -Q and manually set up the package repos and install org-mode.

I'm vaguely concerned that it will get installed in the wrong directory or something...  Let's see.
