This actually works. In fact, this is how I used to control table landscape mode before changing to #+begin_landscape/#+end_landscape. Sorry, I should have been more clear that I use the \usepackage{pdflscape} package that actually rotates the orientation of the page to be more easily readable in a pdf viewer.
