FWIW, the value I set in my .emacs file is "\\colorbox{red}{%s}= ", so
that it stands out in the exported document.
I take it= one step further and use \BADLINK. This causes pdflatex to complain, so th= e export fails. No need to then try to catch it in the exported document.
