I'm at the point where I would like to extract a particular set of tasks (in this case, all tasks of a particular tag) into a separate file. It's really easy to set the agenda view to isolate the tasks, but what's a reasonable way to select those items and move them into a new file? Thanks in advance. I've tried to refile but it wouldn't let me refile outside of the original file. Your answer confirmed it and, digging deeper, I found that I needed to modify org-refile-targets.
