AFAIU, by the time we were ready to merge 8.3, upstream preferred to keep 8.2. My understanding is that the 8.2-series is not really maintained any longer, and I don’t know that it contains any promises of forward comparability. I guess "backporting" the required changes to Emacs-core would be the easiest way forward.
