What about something like [cite/citet*/:@key]?
"*/" is not recognised as bold ending.

This is because links containing "\\*[ -.,;:!?'")}\\[]" match are
extremely rare.

In contrast, [cite/citet*:@key] is likely to be used fairly frequently
and has much higher chance to break things.
