If you do that then you connect to port 119 using cleartext and the connection is (potentially) upgraded using STARTTLS. That=CA=BCs not the same as making a TLS connection to port 563. Whether this matters for reading news is entirely a personal decision. The gmane search interface is sadly indeed defunct. Robert
