A good example of what I pointed at: You have little control over how the content is displayed on the recipients side. Whether the check box /appears/ to be ticked or empty depends on the environment: For me, using w3m to render html back to plain text it is ticked. For me, using a web mail client it is not[1]. It depends on the HTML rendering engine and it's capabilities with regards to render CSS. In HTML export the check box contains the X which is made invisible using a CSS definition.
