OK - I haven't lived with this setup long enough to know better.
On another subject:

the docstring says that the car of each dotted pair in the alist is a
regexp: I presume an emacs regexp, not a shell glob pattern. So the
setting should be
(setq backup-directory-alist '(("/home/delexi/.*" . "/some/dir")))
- no?
