I have no problem with Andreas' example, but it fails in my case, where
"&" symbols are at the beginning of a line:
\begin{equation}
\begin{split}
(a - b) + c &= (a + (-b)) + c\\
&= a + (-b + c)\\
&= a + (c - b)\\
&= (a + c) - b\text{.}
\end{split}
\end{equation}
