They should not visually disappear, but they do.

Consider the following formula line:

|---+---|
|   |   |
|---+---|
#+TBLFM: @1$1=vsum(@-I..@-II)

It becomes this:

#+TBLFM: 1$1=vsum(-I..@-II)
         ^        ^

when `org-hide-emphasis-markers' is turned on.
