I currently get an error [0] when attempting to clone the orgmode git
repository when using the http URL: http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git.
However, reading some back issues of this mailing list, I tried the
git protocol URL, and it worked fine.

Therefore, I suggest either figuring out why the http URL doesn't work
properly, or simply referring to the git:// URL on the website, to
avoid further problems in case someone would like to clone the repo.

Hm, all right. I'm willing to accept something might be bogus in my
configuration; I thought there had been several others who had this
problem, though.

I'm using git 1.5.6.4, in case that helps.

I get a different error:

ian@scamper:~$ git clone http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git

However, using the git:// style url works fine.

My git version is:

Ah, maybe I misunderstood the original post. The error happens not in
a web browser, but when trying to close the repository. SOrry about
that. I guess this must be an error in the repo itself, would one of
you care to report this to the maintainers of repo.or.cz? Thanks.

Dennis,

can you make a concrete proposal where on the webpage I should change
what?  Thanks.

The proposal I make is for me actually to learn English.

The website is fine; I just read it wrong. It says, "More information
on this page: http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git", which I read as "Here
is the clone URL: http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git".

Cloning the http repo that is listed at the website
http://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git results in no errors. Sorry for the
noise.

...

On reflection, since others didn't catch my error before now, perhaps
the following change might clear things up:

 You can check out the latest Org development version (along with every
-release we ever had) by using git. More information on this page:

The wording I chose is supposed to make the reader think, "Hum, but
where is the clone URL? Better click there..." and that webpage has
all the clone URLs.

The URL used in the "git clone" command on the website is wrong. It
should read:

    git clone git://repo.or.cz/org-mode.git

Cloning with the URL given currently on the website gives:

    tmp[94] > git clone git://repo.or.cz/w/org-mode.git
    Initialized empty Git repository in /Users/Shared/src/tmp/org-mode/.git/

You can use "http://repo.or.cz/r/org-mode.git" for cloning over http.

Using the git:// protocol is generally more efficient than http://
because you are talking to a smart server on the other end that can just
send the packs you need for your fetch operation. http:// is a dumb
protocol (in the sense that there is no program on the other end that
knows anything about the git repository) so you end up transferring more
data than you really need to.

I might add a couple of cents' worth. I am clue challenged where it
comes to certain technologies that the users of lists such as this one
seem to take for granted. In particular, while I didn't clearly
understand the problem brought up by the original poster, I did have
quite a bit of trouble with this very link. I couldn't figure out how
to use git at all. I posted on the list, and got help from some
listmembers, clarifying the issues.

In my humble opinion, a clearer explanation of how to "clone" (what's
that?) a git repository, and so on, would be helpful. I have
(probably a bit presumptously) been able to install quite a few
software programs from CVS, subversion, etc., probably even git. In
each case there was a clearly presented instruction of how to use it.

I have appreciated this. As an interloper in the technological world,
in many ways, I owe a massive debt to those who have made it easy for
me to do what I have needed or wanted to do.

It was Manish who explained to me in the clearest terms how to use the
git repository. I trust he will not resent my posting here his
instructions ( in a far less clearly formatted manner than his own,
I'm afraid). I am taking some liberties with his presentation:

I. Org is cloned from it's git repo [perhaps in ~/elisp/org-mode.git:].

 $ mkdir ~/elisp/ && cd ~/elisp
 $ git clone git://repo.or.cz/org-mode.git org-mode.git

II. When one wishes to update the "clone"

   $ cd ~/elisp/org-mode.git && git pull

He explained more of the process of building the package. This was
helpful to me. Perhaps with something similar on the org-mode pages,
a less clueful (but no less keen) newcomer like myself may be given
the gift of understanding.

I have gone on at some length.

Alan

For completeness sake; if you are behind a firewall then, although
inefficient, but HTTP transport may be your only choice (of course
only if you want bleeding edge else you can use release packages.)

  1. $ export http_proxy=your proxy ip/name:port
  2. $ git clone http://repo.or.cz/r/org-mode.git

Hi

If a volunteer writes this up, I'd be happy to include it on the org-
mode pages.

I have just added "How do I keep current with Org mode developement?"
to Org FAQ via Worg. Request a review for language (English is not my
first language.) and correctness (I am not sure if the links I added

Well I've started reading that pdf, and it looks like it's going to be
a good read... But before I go to far, seeing as we're on this topic,
would someone mind saying a few words about git versus other version
control systems? I know nothing about any of them, but have been
meaning to learn how to version control directories trees containing
e.g. org and source code files.

Thanks,

Dan

p.s. That's OK for this list right? Not too off topic?

I will gladly read and make suggestions, as far as that goes.

This seems the easy approach, and certainly sufficient: a mere mention
of this explanation on the Org-Mode page.

Hi Dan,

I know, this is of topic, but I love another software besides Orgmode ;-)

Dan Davison <davison@stats.ox.ac.uk> writes:

I prefere monotone (mtn) [1], since it has

  1. A cleaner user interface
  2. Easier setup and usage (e.g. just put the mtn binary in your $PATH
     on a server and use your online repos via SSH)
  3. Better handling of file permissions (when using an FAT formated
     USB-Stick)
  4. _Very_ helpfull error messages on the command line. monotone always
     guesses what I wanted to do...
  5. SQL interface
  6. Much, much nicer mailinglist
  7. User centric development (UI is one of the most discussed topics on
     the list)
  8. Much better manual
  9. Written in C++ (if you want to hack it...)
  10. Binaries for most common Systems downloadable on monotone.ca (if
      you're working on different machines frequently).

  etc.

The only point where git is better is speed. But I don't care about a
few seconds (just a lot of small projects here => up to ~257 MB, some
more). I don't like to fight with the tools I use - they should just
work and help ME. monotone get's you up and running in about 10
minutes. It works for me since three years now without the slightest
problem.

This is how I use it. You might as well read the first few section in
the goood gooood manual [2]:

------------------------------------------------------------

SETUP WORKSPACE AND REPO

1. Download the mtn binary and put it somewhere in $PATH, or just
   install the Debian package (or what ever distribution you use).

2. Create a key. You need one to work with monotone. See
   http://monotone.ca/docs/Generating-Keys.html#Generating-Keys for more
   information.

   $ mtn genkey user@exmple.com

2. Setup a repository and working directory

   # Setup a Repo. A repo is a Database (SQLight) outside of your
   # working directory.
   $ mtn -d ~/monotone/org.mtn db init

   # cd to working directory:
   $ cd ~/notes

   # This creates the _MTN subdirectory in your workspace. Tell monotone
   # wich branch you want to work on:
   $ mtn -d ~/monotone/org.mtn setup -b trunk .

   # Add everithing in working dir (-R == recursively):
   $ mtn add -R .

   # Commit changes to local repo:
   $ mtn commit -m'initial commit'

------------------------------------------------------------

SYNCHRONIZE TO MACHINES USING AN USB-STICK

1. Copy the repo to my USB-stick

   $ cp ~/monotone/org.mtn /media/disk

2. Take the stick home and plug it into my laptop. Setup a
   workingdirectory there

   $ cp /media/disk/org.mtn ~/monotone
   $ mtn -d ~/monotone/org.mtn co -b trunk ~/notes

   Now I have three repos. I could just setup one repo on the stick, but
   what if I loose the stick?

3. Change something on my laptop and commit the changes

   $ cd ~/notes
   $ echo '* new first level heading' >> index.org
   $ mtn commit -m'new headling in index.org'

4. Synchronize the repo on my laptop with the one on my USB-stick

   $ mtn sync --set-default file:/media/disk/org.mtn '*'

   The '--set-default' is to tell my workspace, that the default repo to
   sync with the one on my stick. In the future I just have to type

   $ mtn sync

5. Take the stick and apply the changes on my PC

   $ cd ~/notes
   $ mtn sync --set-default file:/media/disk/org.mtn '*'
   $ mtn update

   Again: the '--set-default' is to tell my workspace, that the default
   repo to sync with the one on my stick (the asterisk means 'all
   branches' - could be one or more regexps to just sync some
   branches). In the future I just have to type

   $ mtn sync

------------------------------------------------------------

THE _VERY_ SIMPLE SSH VARIANT:

1. Download and install on work station and server. On the server it's
   sufficient to place a binary in $PATH (e.g. ~/bin/).

2. Copy the local repo to the server:

   $ scp ~/monotone/org.mtn user@host:/home/user/monotone/

3. Sync the first time:

   $ mtn sync --set-default ssh://user@host:/home/user/monotone/org.mtn '*'

In the future just use

   $ mtn sync

It's possible to setup a server just like CVS and similar. But I don't
use that variant, since it is more complex (as you know).

------------------------------------------------------------

COMMANDS:

From now on I just cd to the appropriate workspace and use the following
commands:

  $ mtn commit # commit changes
  $ mtn sync # sync repo on disk and the one on USB-stick
  $ mtn push # Just push from local to remote
  $ mtn pull # Just pull from remote to local
  $ mtn update # update the workspace if something new
  $ mtn revert file[s] # undo changes in my workspace
  $ mtn mv file dir/file # rename a file (workspace and repo)
  $ mtn add file # add a file
  $ mtn rm file # delete a file (workspace and repo)

Branching is simple:

  $ mtn commit -m'message' -b new.branch          # creates 'new.branch'
  $ mtn update -b new.branch          # update workspace to 'new.branch'

If you use monotone you might be interested in sr-monotone.el [5], which
puts ChangeLog entries into the workspace/_MTN/log if found. If not, it
calls add-change-log-entry the usual way.

This will work even if you followed a symlink to get to your working
directory. I think it's merged into the 'official' monotone.el, but I'm
not shure (I don't use it).

When/how is the website updated from Worg repo?

I thought the site was probably refreshed once a day or so
since a FAQ entry pushed a day before is still not
reflecting (on the site). Was I supposed to do something
more after pushing?

In fact, we have problems with the Worg publishing process. I don't
understand it well enough, and Bastien does not seem to find time to
fix it... :-(

No, should be automatic....

Hi Manish,

I just ried adding a FAQ entry (about plotting table data :-), and the
automatic update *did* work. Any changes you have pushed will be
collected by the web server at the full hour, and then published at
the half hour. You might need to press refresh in your browser to see
the changes, of course.

yes, sorry for this.

I've been trying to understand this several times with no success.
I will try again and propose a diagnosis on this list, maybe someone
could help.

Also let me say that I'm sorry I had to become a lurker here, but I've
not been able to sort out my priorities efficiently while travelling a
lot the last few months (going to Haïti in august). Maybe I'll make a
nice Worg-entry on this failure someday! (Warm thanks to Carsten for
his patience!)

Best,

This problem is solved by now, updating Worg works just fine.
