"\\ - " seems to work only for LaTeX export.

"^J - " writes down ^J literally, and doesn't work as a break line.

It's C-Q C-J (aka ^Q^J). The CTRL-Q "quotes" the next char (handy also
for other control characters -- see also 7.1 "Inserting Text" in the
fine manual).
