Thanks to Memnon's advice (off list), I was able to track down the
problem. For some reason, the nnregistry file would sometimes not be
updated (it's the .gnus.registry.eioio file) and links would not work.
Saving the file manually (using 's' in the *Group* buffer) fixes it.
