Brilliant - mVersion works nicely. Exactly what I was looking for.

I only had to adjust latexmk as it ran into an endless loop by adding

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
$hash_calc_ignore_pattern{'dat'} = '^[0-9]';
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

to my latexmk config file.
