Offlineimap and then serving up as maildir can get really messy if you have more than one gmail account. Obviously if you want a local email cache offline imap is great combined with something like a local dovecot - I had this setup for a while until I started to consider the possible ramifications of losing my laptop and my entire lifes emails being present on that hard drive ;) The other issue being the plainttext storage of your gmail password although I believe there must be some way of obfuscating that.
