Parentheses are unrelated to inline footnotes, but the matching code
for facifying them considers them to be equivalent to brackets.

This means the rest of the buffer gets facified as a footnote (or not
facified) unless there is a matching parenthesis.

This can take seconds per character and entirely precludes smilies and
ASCII art unless there is a way to escape them.

Is it possible to only acknowledge brackets?
