The FAQ suggests several workarounds; one is You can create a temporary heading, such as "** Continue main section" and > then remove it when you are ready to export. This works, but is quite cumbersome. Is it possible to build on this workaround with a mechanism which tags a temporary heading as special, so that it 1) does not get exported, 2) does not appear in the TOC, 3) does not contribute to section numbering and 4) is displayed in a special face in the Emacs buffer to indicate that it is a temporary heading? Such an approach would go a long way towards making the temporary heading workaround a bit more practical.
