Yes, this is supported and documented:
https://orgmode.org/manual/Plain-lists.html

For example:

 1. Item 1

    1. Sub item 1.1

       1. Sub-sub item 1.1.1

    2. Sub Item 1.2

 2. Item 2

    1. Sub item 2.1
