This seems to work - I can export to html or latex and get the = expected result:

But I don't know all the rules and moreover I don't know of any pla= ce where

Btw, I still need to escape "#+END_= SRC" if they occur at the start of line in text, for example by prepen= ding it with a space (akin to prepending a space to "From " in mb= ox format).
