That's right. Somewhere else in my config, I also set org-agenda-window-setup to 'current-window. That was the secret ingredient for me. Sorry I didn't bring this up sooner. I use Aquamacs, and the easiest thing for me is to use both emacs customize and .emacs (Preferences.el in Mac-speak). I set org-agenda-window-setup in customize, but have the code I included in Preferences.el. Makes it hard for me to remember where stuff is. Cheers.
