Can you please show us a complete, working (I mean non-working) example? I tried to follow your instructions and could not reproduce the problem. Probably you have another star further down in the text below the headline? If this is the case, I think I have just fixed this issue. However, *x is code, so you might want to write =*x= anyway to get proper formatting and escaping of all special characters.
