I've always modified Info-directory-list and have never had a problem. YMMV, of course. However, the documentation (in emacs 24.3.50 as that's what I am using on this laptop...) for Info-default-directory-list says: ,---- | Although this is a customizable variable, that is mainly for technical | reasons. Normally, you should either set INFOPATH or customize | `Info-additional-directory-list', rather than changing this variable. `---- so maybe set the Info-additional-directory-list variable?
