Well, I've tried it and I get essentially the same results as I did on my home system. The behaviour that I observed last week seems to have disappeared. Although the change in behaviour could be due to org changing, I think it's actually my X window system driver which was acting up last week and it could have been causing problems with the font server... I'll re-run the timings if and when the slow behaviour appears again.
