Here is the relevant section 4.51 of the biblatex-chicago manual: With the addition of the author-date styles to the package, I=20 have provided three keys for choosing which style to load,=20 notes, authordate, and authordate-trad , one of which you put in=20 the options to the \usepackage command. The default way of=20 loading the notes + bibliography style has therefore slightly=20 changed. With early versions of biblatex-chicago-notes , the=20 standard way of loading the package was via a call to biblatex ,=20 e.g.: \usepackage[style=3Dchicago-notes,strict,backend=3Dbibtex8,% babel=3Dother,bibencoding=3Dinputenc]{biblatex} Now, the default way to load the style, and one that will in the=20 vast majority of standard cases produce the same results as the=20 old invocation, will look like this: \usepackage[notes,strict,backend=3Dbiber,autolang=3Dother,% bibencoding=3Dinputenc]{biblatex-chicago} (In point of fact, the previous biblatex-chicago loading method=20 without the notes option will still work, but only because I=E2=80=99ve=20 made the notes & bibliography style the default if no style is=20 explicitly requested.) If you read through biblatex-chicago.sty,=20 you=E2=80=99ll see that it sets a number of biblatex options aimed at=20 following the Chicago specification, as well as setting a few=20 formatting variables intended as reasonable defaults (see=20 section 4.4.1, above). Some parts of this specification,=20 however, are plainly more =E2=80=9Csuggested=E2=80=9D than =E2=80=9Crequi= red,=E2=80=9D and=20 indeed many publishers, while adopting the main skeleton of the=20 Chicago style in citations, nonetheless maintain their own house=20 styles to which the defaults I have provided do not conform. If you only need to change one or two parameters, this can=20 easily be done by putting different options in the call to=20 biblatex-chicago or redefining other formatting variables in the=20 preamble, thereby overriding the package defaults. If, however,=20 you wish more substantially to alter the output of the package,=20 perhaps to use it as a base for constructing another style=20 altogether, then you may want to revert to the old style of=20 invocation above. You=E2=80=99ll lose all the definitions in=20 biblatex-chicago.sty, including those to which I=E2=80=99ve already=20 alluded and also the code that sets the note number in-line=20 rather than superscript in endnotes or footnotes. Also in this=20 file is the code that calls cmsamerican.lbx , which means that=20 you=E2=80=99ll lose all the Chicago-specific bibstrings I=E2=80=99ve defi= ned=20 unless you provide, in your preamble, a \DeclareLanguageMapping=20 command adapted for your setup, on which see section 7 below and=20 also =C2=A7=C2=A7 4.9.1 and 4.11.8 in biblatex.pdf . What you will not lose is the ability to call the package=20 options annotation, strict, short, and noibid (section 4.4.3,=20 above), in case these continue to be useful to you when=20 constructing your own modifications. There=E2=80=99s very little code,=20 therefore, actually in biblatex-chicago.sty , but I hope that=20 even this minimal separation will make the package somewhat more=20 adaptable. Any suggestions on this score are, of course,=20 welcome. All the best, Tom -- Thomas S. Dye https://tsdye.online/tsdye
