It fails at testing because you do not have ert installed.  If you want
testing (recommended if you pull from master since it will avoid
installation of the occasional build that fails the test suite), install
ert or better yet switch to Emacs24 which has it built-in already.

I'll make "update" a compatibility target that doesn't run "check"
(similarly a new "update2" which does installation but no test) and let
a new target "up1" do that (and "up0" does just the update from git).
