I firgot to add that I found it necessary to get rid of the default
org-file-apps for pdf files, which I think is (was?) docview. So I use:

#+begin_src elsp
(add-hook 'org-mode-hook
           (lambda ()
            (delete '("\\.pdf\\'" . default) org-file-apps)
            (add-to-list 'org-file-apps '("\\.pdf\\'" . "xpdf %s"))))
#+end_src

I don't like evince, sorry.

Best wishes,

Colin.
