I implemented `org-macro-escape-arguments' which can replace your
initial snippet:

+		   ;; Escape commas and preceding backslash per
+		   ;;  (info "(org) Macro replacement").
+		   (replace-regexp-in-string
+		    "\\(\\\\*\\)\\(,\\)"
+		    (lambda (str)
+		      (let ((len (length (match-string 1 str))))
