This looks quite nice.
I am unlikely to try it out, however, as my simple cite: (and related
citep:) link definition does the job for me. I keep things simple when
writing papers... I let the journal editors and publishers worry about
detail ;-). Nevertheless, I can see this enhancement being quite useful
for those that need the extra features in reference citations.
