Which is why you can switch between table.el and org tables with C-c C-c (to recognize an existing table) and then C-c ~ to convert it between the two formats if possible. You do lose some formatting going back and forth, though. True some formatting is lost, but already just org-mode-tables.el automatic conversion is quite nice, and might come handy.
