If I start with emacs -q I get the distro packaged version, which is 7.8 on my system - and that works fine. So the problem I refer to seems to have been introduced somewhere between 7.8 and 8.2. I suppose I should look at the code myself, but I have no familiarity with it and thought someone else might know ...
