GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) of 2010-05-08 on G41R2F1
Org-mode version
         7.01trans-commit-1d1439f91e63e71f39e93622a0af439762522c00

Also escaping the brackets does not work Example:

** A heading
This is a broken footnote.[fn:: Some book at \[42-24\].]

 Exports to:

1 A heading
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a broken footnote.[1].]
[1] Some book at \[42-24\
