Hi Jeremiah,

"somewhat sporadically" is a very good description for the behaviour after I 
started to investigate. My best guess is to delete this line from my .emacs:

(setq-default auto-fill-function 'do-auto-fill)

And yes, a TAB fails to indent the line.
