My situation is that I have a heading which refers to a (C) pointer variable, *x, "* A note on the variable *x". When I exported this to HTML, everything under the heading appeared as part of the heading. I then tried to escape the star with a backslash ("\*"), which eliminated the confusion with the heading and its body, but the backslash showed up in the heading: "* A note on the variable \*x". This is obviously not what I want, I wanted the backslash to prevent the star from being treated by Org as rich-text markup (i.e. *bold*), and to be removed from the final product.
