Hi everyone,

I just released 7.9.3, which is a bugfix release but not only:
I tried hard to speed up the agenda generation, and I hope you
will see some progress in this area.

As a test, try (setq org-agenda-use-tag-inheritance nil) and
see how your TODO agenda are doing...

Details about this on the list of changes:
  http://orgmode.org/Changes.html#sec-1

You can get Org 7.9.3 by downloading the package here:

  http://orgmode.org/org-7.9.3.zip
  http://orgmode.org/org-7.9.3.tar.gz

This will most probably be the version included in Emacs 24.3,
which is still in pretest.

I cannot insist enough: *thanks* to everyone who contributed
to this release and who contributes actively to Org 8.0, we
are making the Emacs world better!

Cheers,

Hi Bastien,

thanks for the new release. Orgmode is getting better all the time!

Speeding up the agenda generation is very welcome. I am just about to
test it.
What I now get is that the non-inherited tags are shown directly after
the item text, that is the alignment to a certain column seems to be lost.
Did you change that behaviour?

Cheers, Rainer

I introduced a bug here, fixed now. Please continue to test heavily:
Emacs is in pretest, and we'll release 7.9.4 soon if needed.

Thanks!

Glad to read this -- if 20000 Org users spare 10 seconds
each per day, that's more than 2 days of everyone's time
spared per day... :)

Thanks for working so hard on this.

Now however, I can't export my mobile-org data. It writes nothing to
my define mobile-org directory. I'll see if I can find some time to
dig into it a little deeper..

Without knowing any elisp, one symptom I see is that while preparing the
export, the status line says

org-agenda-finalize: Buffer is read-only: #<buffer *SUMO*>

then the export stops.

I've tried deleting the SUMO buffer, and running it again, but the same
thing happens.

If I go back to version 7.9.2, it works as it should...

Can you test latest maint or master branch? I think I've fixed it.

Positively, where do I get that? I normally get my Orgs from
git://repo.or.cz/org-mode.git, is that the one you would be speaking of?

I just pulled the latest Org version but inherited tags still aren't
visible in my agenda.

I also tried to add "(setq org-agenda-use-tag-inheritance (quote
(agenda)))" with no effect.

If you want to look at all of my current org-mode specific settings,
please visit http://paste.grml.org/1182/

What is my problem that prevents inherited tags being visible in my
agenda?

Thanks!

AFAIK, that's a mirror and may be out of date.

The canonical place is

    git://orgmode.org/org-mode.git

See

This is the current way of Org.

Note that this is just about the "visible" tags. If you hit
`T' on the agenda line, you should see inherited tags too if
you have the default `org-agenda-use-tag-inheritance'.

Which lets you have tag filtering okay... etc.

> What is my problem that prevents inherited tags being visible in my
> agenda?

It is not a problem with *your* config...

I implemented this because it speeds up agenda generation *a
lot* and those visible tags are just information. But I 100%
hear you and I understand this can be disruptive.

It's a bit chaotic for the user in this area.

  org-use-tag-inheritance
  org-agenda-use-tag-inheritance
  org-agenda-remove-tags
  org-agenda-show-inherited-tags
  org-agenda-hide-tags-regexp
  ...

I'll clean up things and restore the previous behavior, but
I want the current one to be available anyway.

Best,

Indeed.

I was thinking of a config issue because up to my last git pull, all
inherited tags *were* visible in my agenda. Which I do like because
I tend to use inheritance for information.

For example, I am adding a meeting with one person to the contact
heading of that person (which is tagged with JohnSmith) and
therefore I see the link to John Smith when I use a simple
sub-heading for our meeting like: "*** <2013-01-09 10:00-11:00> Meeting"

> I implemented this because it speeds up agenda generation *a

I do have a very poor performing agenda (approx. 121.000 lines of
Org) especially when I am querying my Memacs[1] data (additional
220.000 lines of Org in archive files).

However, since I use tag inheritance as a form of de-duplication, I
am willing to wait for them to be parsed :-)

> I'll clean up things and restore the previous behavior, but
> I want the current one to be available anyway.

A new standard behavior for speeding up agenda for lots of users is
fine to me as long as I am able to modify it to get previous
behavior sometime in the future. :-)

Please pull again -- I restored the default behavior.

I'm a bit on a headache, so perhaps I've lost myself in the
possibilities, and forgot to handle a case. If that's so just
let me know!

Thanks for testing,

Inherited tags now visible again at my agenda. Thank you very much!

Another strange issue that I recognized today though: my habits do
not work any more: Whenever I mark an habit as DONE, it does not get
re-scheduled as is was before your recent changes. A CLOSED
time-stamp is added instead.

Is there something I overlooked in the list of changes that I have
to adopt or do I face a bug?

Before marking as done:

I tried to reproduce the issue but couldn't ... perhaps I need
more info from your config file? If you can go and bisect, that'd
be great. Thanks!

I bisected this issue. It resulted in:

,----

| commit 8f749c983493a010c4ae0437975c8cb63017c3f4

I also have to add, that *Messages* shows following lines when I set
an habit to DONE when using a commit-ID that has the issue mentioned
above:

,----
| TODO state changed to DONE

I must still be doing something wrong. I'm using org version 7.9.3c,
and my habits are closing when I change TODO to DONE.

Is there something else that has to be changed. They used to work a
few updates ago.

I am using the git version: Org-mode version 7.9.3c
(release_7.9.3c-816-g409ee8 ...)

If you aren't pulling from the git, your 7.9.3c might be outdated.
