You can turn off the subscript interpretation of underscores globally in the file by using #+OPTIONS: ^:nil See section 12.2, "Export options", of the Org manual. AFAIK, there is no way to make underscores be underscores in some cases and trigger subscripts in other cases, in the same file. Nick
