I'm trying to fill this
paragraph by pressing
M-q now

I get the following error:

Strangely, if I now go back to the buffer and try M-q this time it will
fill the paragraph as intended.

A solution that worked for me was to replace all calls to
fill-forward-paragraph with fill-paragraph.
